AS Zimbabwe’s tourism sector seeks new growth avenues, Domboview Adventures is emerging as a trailblazer, blending cultural heritage, eco-friendly practices and community empowerment to promote domestic tourism.

Their flagship event, the Ngomakurira Colour Hiking, set for October 25, is not just a hike—it’s a vibrant celebration of Zimbabwean identity, tradition, and natural beauty. This year, the event holds a special significance as Domboview Adventures is leveraging its platform to support Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place in October. The company has dedicated the Ngomakurira Colour Hiking to this cause, with a special emphasis on supporting women affected by cancer. The campaign will incorporate the colour pink into the event’s theme, and a portion of the proceeds will be used to raise awareness and provide support for cancer-affected women, reinforcing the company’s commitment to community welfare.

Founded by a passionate Zimbabwean with a vision to reconnect people with their roots, Domboview Adventures specializes in curated hiking and cultural experiences at sites like Ngomakurira, Mavanga Cave, and Domboshava.

The founder Dr Pearson Pfavayi, who has traveled extensively across Zimbabwe and beyond, was inspired to create a platform that would both showcase the country’s hidden gems and revive fading traditions.

“We believe that by bringing people back to our sacred mountains, caves, and heritage sites, we are not just offering an adventure—we are reviving our cultural identity and passing it on to the next generation. Our events are about more than hiking; they are about reconnecting with who we are as Zimbabweans,” said Dr Pearson Pfavayi, founder of Domboview Adventures.

The Ngomakurira Colour Hiking event exemplifies this ethos. Participants will trek the iconic granite mountain, renowned for its ancient San rock art and spiritual significance, while engaging in a colourful, festive atmosphere. The event includes guided tours, storytelling about the site’s history, team-building activities, and cultural rituals such as wearing traditional “zambia” cloths—a nod to local customs and a symbol of unity.

Domboview Adventures is at the forefront of Zimbabwe’s eco-friendly tourism movement. The company’s operations are designed to minimize environmental impact, with activities like hiking, abseiling, and nature retreats that promote conservation and respect for natural sites. By partnering with the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe, Domboview ensures that its events support the preservation of heritage sites and the protection of ancient rock art.

The company also prioritizes community involvement, sourcing supplies locally and creating economic opportunities for residents in the Domboshava area. This approach aligns with national and global best practices in sustainable tourism, which emphasise responsible travel, community benefit, and the safeguarding of both natural and cultural resources.

Ngomakurira, meaning “drums sounding” in Shona, is more than a scenic hiking destination. It is a sacred site, historically used for rainmaking ceremonies and spiritual rituals by local communities. The mountain’s caves house some of Zimbabwe’s best-preserved San rock art, offering a window into the beliefs and daily life of the country’s earliest inhabitants.

Domboview’s ambitions are in step with recent government initiatives.

Last month, Zimbabwe launched the Tourism and Hospitality Industry Policy (2025–2030), which places strong emphasis on domestic tourism, cultural preservation, and eco-friendly practices.

The policy encourages innovative strategies to accelerate tourism development, leverage the country’s rich heritage, and empower local communities.
