Domestic violence: Women fight for men

Herald Correspondent

A women’s organisation advocating for men’s rights, Men’s Ego Safe Haven (MESH) has noted that men have also become victims of domestic violence but are suffering in silence.

MESH said violence against men is on the increase and in trying to protect their ego men become monsters to their families.

Ms Berita Saranji, the chief executive officer of MESH, said people have to look at both sides if they were to stop gender based violence completely.

“We say men’s rights are gender rights too. What triggered is that there is a gender gap that needs gender balance.

“From our research in Zimbabwe, in 2014, one in every 15 men were facing abuse and in 2018, one in every 10 were facing abuse and now one in every 4 is facing some form of abuse.”

Ms Saranji said they were tackling gender based violence in Zimbabwe by recognising men’s rights as they are gender rights too.

She said anything that contradicts with the reality that men must have their own rights was not for peace as men have become monsters trying to protect their ego.

“Culturally men are a shy species and were taught to bottle their pain and sorrow and they do not want to speak of their abuse as they try to protect their ego. We have started to educate them and some are actually coming out and it is amazing how they are responding.”

Ms Saranji said men want to be heard as they will end up in grave or in prison after committing serious crimes due to anguish.
