DOMINICAN Convent chess team has left the country for the World Schools Chess Championship scheduled for Washington DC, United States from August 3 to 6.

The eight-member team was seen off at a send-off ceremony yesterday and they are confident that they will do well.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation president Todd Mapingire, who is the head of delegation, said they are looking forward to go and learn and try their best.

“As we embark on this journey to America, we are filled with excitement and anticipation. We are confident that our team will showcase their skills and make a mark on the global stage,” said Mapingire.

“We are grateful to the sponsors and supporters who made this a possibility as your contributions will have a lasting impact on the lives of these young chess players.

“I am also grateful to FIDE for their continued support and guidance in promoting chess globally.”

NMB bank came on board and supported the team financially, a big boost ahead of the tournament.

NMB branch and business development manager Faustina Marowa said they are happy to have partnered Dominican Convent and are hopeful that they will do well.

“At NMB Bank, we believe in investing in the future and that future lies in the brilliance, discipline and determination of our youth. Chess is more than a game; it teaches strategy, patience and resilience, qualities that build leaders,” said Marowa.

“By supporting this team, we are not just sponsoring a trip; we are nurturing excellence. We are delighted to officially hand over a cheque of US$5 000 to support the team’s travel and participation.

“We hope this contribution helps ease the journey and allows the players to focus on what they do best making smart moves and making us proud.”
