Dominican Convent School’s Dumisile Mpamba proved that the best is saved for the last. Coming in as the last of the 12 contestants to perform at “Sing Your Way to Paris” finals at Alliance Franciase, she scooped the top prize.
The 15-year-old entertained the crowd as she performed in French, singing and dancing to a French love jam. The performance was described as exceptional by the judges.
She won a ticket to Paris. The young girl thanked her friends and family for being there for her and encouraging her.
“I am so happy and I would like to thank all my friends and family for their support. This is finally a dream come true for me, I still cannot believe this is actually happening. I live and breathe music and an adventure to Paris is an addition to my dreams. As a young lady I enjoy to take up different challenges of pushing myself to the utmost possible limits. I am aware how life brings across different unique opportunities and this is one such for me, a drive to do my best in all things,” she said.
The event challenges singers to go beyond the usual by learning and singing a French song even if they are non French-speaking.
This competition is one of the ways in which Alliance Francaise executes its mandate to promote cultural diversity and exchange.
Hope Masike who was part of the jury on what they were looking for she said, “We were looking for someone who has a balance, it was not really about who has the greatest voice or who can dance well on stage but it was about being able to pick someone who could do both sing as well as dance, showing a lot of confidence in what they will be performing.”
The competition aims at encouraging wide participation among the Zimbabwean students community so as to select the best singer in French on the occasion of the Francophonie celebration week.
In the past, the likes of Briony Pasipanodya of St John’s College (2011) and University of Zimbabwe student Peniel Tambama (2012) have gone to France through this opportunity.
