ZIMBABWE representatives at the World Schools Chess Championship, Dominican Convent, arrived home on Monday as the best-placed African team in attendance in Califonia, United States.
The team made up of Ropafadzo Gwatidzo, Ginevieve Moyo, Crystal Chaitezvi, Precious Gwena, Miranda Muchaka, Maita Mangwende (Captain), Ropafadzo Chikwanda and Rosemary Omiti showcased not only the skill and determination of young chess players, but highlighted the growing presence of African teams on the global stage.
The team was part of the world stage having established itself as a local champion.
Dominican Convent participated with great zeal and managed to outperform all other African teams, signaling a promising future for chess in the region.
Among the African teams, only three met the criteria for participation – Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Kenya.
Zimbabwe stood out not only for its overall performance but also for fielding an all-girls team, a first at the championship.
The organisers expressed admiration for this initiative, which not only promotes gender inclusivity but also showcases the potential of female chess players in Africa.
Zimbabwe’s all-girls team performed exceptionally well, further solidifying the country’s reputation as a chess powerhouse on the continent.
