AN interim fundraising committee that will spearhead the mobilisation of financial requirements for the new Premier Soccer League side Dongo Sawmills has been chosen.
The interim committee’s major task is to raise enough funds needed for the club to kick-start its maiden season.
The interim committee was elected at a meeting held at Troutbeck Inn in Nyanga on Saturday.
Hotelier Marvene Pahla was elected interim chairman while Rusape-based businessperson, Regis Kaondera was elected deputy chairperson. The interim secretary is Mike Kazembe, Gift Musiyandaka (treasurer), committee members are Lovemore Chibvura, Colonel Stanely Mangena, George Manyumwa, Tsitsi Chiwandambira Chupfunya and ZiFM Stereo head of news Kelvin Jakachira.
The Minister of Information Communication, Technology and Courier Services, Supa Mandiwanzira was unveiled as the club’s patron.
The Nyanga South member of the House of Assembly pledged to work hard to ensure the club remains in the top flight league. Mandiwanzira said stakeholders are working flat out to ensure a stadium is built in Nyanga.
Zifa eastern region secretary general Wisdom Simba, who attended the stakeholders’ meeting, said Vengere Stadium needs some renovations for it to meet the standards required to host top league matches.
Club owner Francis Dongo said the club’s structures were revamped to give a professional touch to their day to day operations. Stakeholders from Nyanga and Rusape attended the meeting. Meanwhile, members of the interim committee are proposing to change the name of the club to Nyanga United.
The team will be using Vengere Stadium in Rusape as its home ground.
The Nyanga outfit was promoted into the top flight league after winning the Eastern Region Division One title following a tightly contested race with Mutare City Rovers and they became the first team to win the Eastern Region Division One title after spending only one season in the second tier league.
