IN a season full of ups and downs, Chicken Inn goalkeeper Donovan Bernard could barely hide his emotions as he took the stage to receive the Goalkeeper of the Year award at the Soccer Stars banquet on Friday night.

The Chicken Inn first choice was named the best goalkeeper in the land after registering 20 clean sheets during the just-ended Castle Lager Premier League season.

An emotional Donovan dedicated the award to his mother, who stood by him through thick and thin.

“This is one of the biggest moments in my life and career, and I want to dedicate it to my family, especially my mother,” he said.

“My father passed away when I was a young boy, and one would have expected that my mother would come heavy on me to concentrate on my schoolwork.

“However, she did not. Being here today (winning the Goalkeeper of the Year award) is because of the support I have received from her.

“She did not care about grades; all she cared about was to see me pursue my dream in football. Now, I dedicate this award to her.”

Donovan revealed that he receives a call from his mother before and after every match, during which she showers him with support and encouragement.

“Before and after every match, I get calls from my family and mother; it is something that has developed to be my pre- and post-match ritual,” he said.

Donovan admitted it was not an easy feat to be nominated the best goalkeeper of the season.

“It was a very tough season with ups and downs, but I am happy that I managed to get the recognition,” he said.

“This award is for my teammates, technical team, family and fans who supported us.”

Donovan paid tribute to former national team goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro for making a difference in his career.

“I give credit to the coach (Energy Murambadoro); he gave me hope when the chips were down,” he said.

“He encouraged me to keep pushing. He supported me emotionally and encouraged me to pick myself up.”
