Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Deputy Minister, Dr Godfrey Gandawa has told Parliament that no university students should be prohibited from writing examinations over non-payment of fees.

He was responding in the National Assembly to MDC-T MP for Bulawayo East, Ms Thabita Khumalo who sought to know Government policy on barring of students from writing examinations due to outstanding fees.

She said students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Lupane State University (LSU), Midlands State University (MSU) and the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) were barred from sitting their examinations by authorities for failing to pay fees.

Ms Khumalo said the students were only allowed to write the examinations after their intervention.

“Government policy is that no student should be prohibited from writing examinations,” said Dr Gandawa.

“All students must write examinations while they look for fees. If there are any institutions that are prohibiting students from writing examinations, we would like you to give us details.”

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Mr Aldrin Musiiwa said no health institution was allowed to detain patients who failed to pay their hospital fees.

He said the institution and the patient were expected to come up with a payment arrangement if money was not readily available.
