ZANU-PF Politburo Member Cde Thokozile Mathuthu has urged the Matabeleland North provincial Women’s League leadership to guard against allowing corruption to creep into the food distribution programme in the province.

Cde Mathuthu said it was important for the members of the provincial executive to demonstrate leadership by uplifting communities and making sure that resources are shared equally.

She was addressing the provincial Women’s League executive members from the province’s seven districts, during an induction workshop in Lupane yesterday.

“The past agricultural season was adversely affected by El Niño but President Mugabe has assured the nation that no one will starve.

“As leaders in Matabeleland North province, President Mugabe trusts that we will take our positions to ensure that those tasked with food distribution will do so above board. We should never allow corruption to creep into this programme,” she said.

Cde Mathuthu said the objective of the one-day induction workshop was to remind the provincial leaders of their role in the party and their communities.

Cde Mathuthu, who is also the Deputy Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, emphasised the importance of giving knowledge and direction to lower structures.

“This workshop is meant to be an eye opener and opportunity for women in leadership positions to get an appreciation of the roles they are expected to execute within the party and the community.

“As women, we play a pivotal role in Zanu-PF. I’ve no doubt that we’re all aware that the party’s manifesto during the 2013 elections was about Zim-Asset, which is meant to ensure economic growth. If all of us are committed to duty, I’ve no doubt that we’ll achieve the goals set in Zim-Asset,” said Cde Mathuthu.

The country’s constitution, she added, presents a lot of opportunities, rights and privileges for women.

“As leaders, it’s our responsibility to improve living conditions in our country. This workshop is therefore critical as it gives us an opportunity to deliberate on different businesses to embark on,” said Cde Mathuthu.

Cde Sithembiso Nyoni, the House of Assembly Member for Nkayi North and Zanu-PF Central Committee member, facilitated the induction workshop.

She said it was important for women elected into leadership positions to appreciate their roles and spearhead economic development programmes in the province.

“The problem is that we think somebody out there owes us something but the way forward is to have vision and that vision begins with us. We need to be organised and find ways of uplifting our communities,” said Cde Nyoni.

She said it was important for the women to regularly meet and discuss possible ideas to transform the economy and seek advice from the national leadership.

The workshop was also attended by Central Committee member Sikhanyisiwe Mpofu and members of the national and provincial executive of the Zanu-PF Women’s League.
