From securing her fourth National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) nomination to clinching the Outstanding Female Musician award in 2023, her first Nama, gospel sensation Dorcas Moyo is aiming to add yet another accolade to her growing collection.

The gospel star triumphed over formidable competition from fellow songstresses Feli Nandi and Sandra Ndebele in 2023, solidifying her status as one of Zimbabwe’s top female musicians. Now, she is vying for the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Namas, competing against industry heavyweights Voltz JT, Master H, Winky D, and comedian Mai Kirifodhi. The awards will be held on Saturday at the Harare Hippodrome.

Publicly nominated and decided by public vote, the People’s Choice Award nomination is proof of Moyo’s widespread appeal. Her music, a staple in public transport and local radio stations, has made her a household name across Zimbabwe.

Reflecting on her nomination, Moyo who hails from Mutare in Manicaland province, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition.

“Namas are undoubtedly the most prestigious awards in the country, and I cherish every moment of being celebrated while alive. I’m truly honoured and pray that God continues to remember me,” she said.
“For me, it’s all by God’s grace. I don’t follow any particular formula — just a commitment to walk in harmony with His will.”
She also extended appreciation to those who have supported her journey.

“As a person, I owe everything to the people around me — my manager, family and fans. Their belief in me pushes me to strive for excellence. If I win, I’ll embrace the award with gratitude as it will serve as a stepping stone for even greater things to come,” she added.

Renowned for her powerful vocals and faith-based teachings through music, Moyo’s work resonates with audiences from all walks of life.

Since her studio debut in 2005, Moyo has built an impressive discography that includes nine albums and multiple singles. She blends various genres — sungura, reggae, passada, and kizomba — to connect with diverse audiences. Her albums, Zvininipise (2018), Ndibatsirei Mwari (2019), and Mvere Dzabvepi (2024), showcase her dynamic musical approach.

Moyo’s talent has not gone unnoticed internationally. Last year, she was honoured as Africa Best Female Artiste of the Year at the 2024 Clima Africa Awards, the continent’s premier gospel music awards.

Looking ahead, the singer is preparing for a United States tour in June with confirmed performances at Lovers Lane in Dallas (June 14), Shepherd’s House in Durham (June 21) and Pilgrims Community Church in Atlanta (June 29).(@chronicle)
