WHILE his locally based peers are pondering their futures amid confusion over the start of the domestic cricket season, Tawanda Mupariwa is feeling good down under.Last month, players caused the abandonment of the Logan Cup match between Matabeleland Tuskers and MidWest Rhinos in Bulawayo as they protested over non-payment of salaries.
Zimbabwe Cricket has been mum on the matter as well as plans for this season.But as local cricket staggers from one low to another, Mupariwa is enjoying life at Newton Cricket Club, hopeful for a Chevrons recall.
“I am in a good place at the moment,” said the 31-year-old whose last game for Zimbabwe was an ODI against India last June.
The Zimbabwean is featuring regularly for Newton Club where he is also putting in the hours in a bid to turn himself into an all-rounder.
“I am happy with where my life and cricket is at. It has been very good, the cricket is very competitive, national team and (Sheffield) shield players play first grade, guys like (George) Bailey, (Tim) Paine, (James) Faulkner, (Ben) Dunk, to name a few,” he said.
Despite settling well in Australia where he has the security of a five-year contract, Mupariwa is determined to add more caps to his solitary Test match, 40 ODIs and four T20 internationals.
“I am working hard on my batting with my coach here. I am now batting at three, I am enjoying (facing) serious fast bowlers here,” said Mpariwa. “Yes I am in a good place at the moment but would still love to play international cricket for Zimbabwe if the opportunity comes.”
Mupariwa is still Mr Work ethics. “I do gym from 6am – 7:30 am. I do coaching and hit balls throughout the day and I also do a lot of strength and cardio work,” said the lad, whose young brother Tafara is on the books of Tuskers.
“Tafara is something special,” said Mupariwa.
