Dr Gasolo 3rd walkathon to raise awareness against substance abuse

Poet Dr Gasolo is gearing up to embark on his annual walkathon, aimed at advancing the recognition of the Creative Cultural Industries (CCIs) as a legitimate profession and business.

This year, the Dr Gasolo Long Walk To Success is focused on “Amplifying the voices of creatives and standing firm in raising awareness against drugs, alcohol, and substance abuse, while bridging the gap between the arts and the corporate world.”

Dr Gasolo said the walk, now in its third edition, will kick off on August 8 from Matshetsheni to Gwanda town. On August 9, he will continue from Gwanda town to Esigodini. On August 10, he will conclude his walk from Esigodini to Bulawayo.

The walk will commence with a small event in Matshetsheni where Dr Gasolo plans to donate sewing machines to teenage girls not attending school.
“After donating these sewing machines, my partner, who is designing the walk outfits, has generously offered to travel to Matshetsheni and provide sewing lessons to these girls. This initiative aims to empower them to make a living from their newfound skills,” the poet said in an earlier interview.

He highlighted the need for people to support the cause, citing the prevalence of stress and depression among artistes, which often leads to substance abuse.

Despite facing financial constraints, Dr Gasolo has secured some partnerships, including outfit designs for the walk and promises from other stakeholders.

Notable artistes, including Sotja Moyo and Jeys Marabini, have pledged to participate in the walk, along with the support of Chief Dakamela from Nkayi.

The walkathon serves as a platform to connect the arts industry with the business community, fostering unity among artists and promoting their growth within the region.
