Dragons 1 show their class

STRONG work ethic paid off for Old Georgians Dragons 1 who maintained their momentum in the domestic Sevens Rugby Series after defeating their league rivals Old Hararians 29-12 at Harare Sports Club at the weekend. The champions gave Old Hararians a tough time in the first half where they scored their first try in the second minute of the match through talented winger Brendon Boshi.

Jacques Leitao ended the first half with a flourish for the Dragons when he touched down to make it 24-0.

In the second half Old Hararians came back strongly and registered 12 points but it was too late as Dragons held their nerve to win the game comfortably.

Old Georgians’ Kuda Chiwanza said he was glad with the way they handled the assignment.

“Our technique keeps improving, we did a lot of team work to get the victories in our fixtures.

“I was happy that I created a lot of tries and also scored some tries. The last match against Old Hararians was the one that I enjoyed the most because it had lot of competition.

“We had both 15s and Sevens players in our team.

“Tomorrow we are going to continue with our training to ensure that we are ready for the last leg of the Series on Saturday which we are hoping to win,” said Chiwanza.

The second leg of the Series had a low turnout because of the rainy conditions.

In another encounter which was played in the morning, Harare Sports Club defeated Western Panthers in a match they controlled for long periods. David Makamba, who plays 15s, played sevens because some of the players did not turn up.

Makamba even contributed a brilliant try in their encounter against the Panthers.

“I enjoyed our matches though they were tough because our team did not have the usual sevens players.

“We had a fewer number of sevens players and we had injuries. I was called up late. Initially I had gone to give support to the team but the coach Daniel Hondo called me and said I must fill the gap.

“It was my first time to play in a sevens tournament and scoring a try made my day. It was a good experience although we did not come out tops,” said Makamba.

Sports Club were severely depleted as they had no substitutes on the bench. Among their players were four who specialise in the 15s.

Sports Club were unfortunate in their last match where they lost 7-19 to the Barbarians.
