Canadian rap superstar Drake is celebrating more than just his country’s progress at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after cashing in a massive sports wager following Canada’s 1-0 victory over South Africa.
Before the Round of 32 clash, Drake revealed on Instagram that he had placed a $770,000 (approximately R13.8 million) bet through Stake on Canada to beat Bafana Bafana. The wager carried a total payout of $1,001,000 (around R18 million) if Canada advanced to the next round.
With Canada’s victory secured, the Grammy-winning artist walked away with the seven-figure payout, earning an estimated profit of $231,000 (about R4.1 million) after deducting his original stake.
Drake added a playful twist to the wager by revealing that South African DJ Black Coffee had motivated the high-stakes bet.
“@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM. I had to raise the STAKES,” Drake wrote alongside a screenshot of the betting slip.
The bet quickly became a talking point across social media, with South African fans joking about the infamous “Drake Curse”, the long-running internet theory that athletes and teams backed by the rapper often go on to lose.
This time, however, the superstition failed to materialise as Canada edged past Bafana Bafana to book their place in the Round of 16.
Drake’s latest wager is just another headline-making gamble in his long-running partnership with Stake. The rapper has become known for placing eye-watering bets on major sporting events, including NBA games, UFC fights, boxing bouts, and football tournaments, regularly sharing both his wins and losses with his millions of followers.
