Drama as mubobobo man burns charms

proceeded to burn his muti insisting he no longer wanted it.

Mr Champion Chitambira, a frail octogenarian, stunned fellow villagers including the headman and Chief Mugabe, Mr Matubede Mudavanhu, when he openly confessed to have bedded almost all the women in Mashandudze Village using his magical muti.

Stunned villagers could not believe their eyes as Mr Chitambira openly dug out his mubobobo charms which were hidden under a verdant bush in the middle of his homestead before openly telling the crowd he no longer wanted to use the muti anymore.

Women ululated while men whistled as Mr Chitambira swore that he no longer wanted to use charms. He said he was tricked by some Malawian nationals whom he met in Chiredzi in the 1940s. He claimed the Malawi nationals gave him the mubobobo after misleading him that it was a luck charm.

Among the items that were part of Mr Chitambira’s mubobobo was a red, white and black cloth, some beads, small pointed horns and some oily substance that was in a plastic container.

“I am repenting now. I no longer want this stuff (mubobobo) because I have become unpopular even among my children and other villagers. They all shun me and so I have decided to let my mubobobo go.

“Maybe my relations with fellow villagers here may improve. Nobody wants to take care of me anymore. I am an invalid and I rely on people’s benevolence for food and even clothing but nobody would help me anymore because of my mubobobo,’’ he claimed. Mr Chitambira openly claimed that he had bedded the majority of women in his village and the surrounding villages.

“I have been doing this since 1999 when I relocated to this village and I slept with most of the women who are here. I do not know why I was really doing it but I just found myself up walking to my next target. I, however, want to apologise to all my victims. I am asking for forgiveness from all my victims. I am now old and I want to die peacefully,’’ added Mr Chitambira.

The octogenarian said the modus operandi of his mubobobo trade involved him waking up in the dead of the night while naked and then take out his muti which gave him the power to sleep with any woman he desired.

“I went out on my escapades while naked and only armed with my charms and I would simply open up the door even if it was locked. I would get into the room where my target for that night would be sleeping and I would push the husband aside and then satisfy myself. I did this to many women that I liked but I no longer want to continue doing this,’’ he confessed.

The divorced father of four said he regretted ever accepting the charms saying some of his charms were initially burnt by a witch hunter (tsikamutanda) a couple of years ago at Chief Mugabe’s homestead.

Some of the village women who fell victim to Mr Chitambira demanded that he be chased away from the village as he had caused them untold suffering.

“We are not even sure whether what he burnt today is all he had because witch hunters came here and removed some charms several times but he continued to have sex with us to a point of imperilling our marriages. Our husbands believed we were now seeing other men,’’ said Mrs Elizabeth Kwangware (32) from Mashandudze village who claimed to be a victim of the old man.

Another alleged victim, Mrs Makaita Mudavanhu (36) of the same village said women in the area had had sleepless nights for the past 10 years and expressed hope that the burning of Mr Chitambira’s charms would signal a new era.

Mr Chitambira’s daughter-in-law, Ms Sinikiwe Mutonga said she discovered that her father-in-law had some muti after she found out that her private parts were soiled with semen even when her husband was away.

Headman Samson Mashandudze said he would not chase away Mr Chitambira as he was satisfied that he had destroyed all his charms that had caused village women sleepless nights. Chief Mugabe also waived a fine on the old man saying he was a destitute and of advanced age and hence he would give him a final warning.

“I think this will serve as a warning to others of his ilk that charms do not help at all,’’ said Chief Mugabe.
