Drama at Masondo funeral

THE family, politicians, celebrities and thousands of other people gathered on Sunday to say goodbye to Soul Brothers’ founder David Masondo. But the pomp and ceremony of celebrating Masondo’s life at Hammarsdale Stadium in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa was disrupted when rowdy mourners, tired of the endless speeches, demanded that Masondo’s famous Mama kaSibongile be played.

Even when the power went down, people simply continued singing their own version of the song, dancing and clapping hands.

Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa also had to stop talking as mourners demanded Masondo’s hit-song.

The musician’s coffin arrived in a classic Mercedes-Benz hearse followed by three new Mercedes-Benz C200s and two Range Rovers.

More than 30 of his children and relatives sat calmly before his solid oak coffin surrounded by green and white flowers.

Asked for the names of her siblings who were sitting around her, one of Masondo’s children, said: “We don’t know each other. It’s hard for me or anyone else to name us all.

“It’s the first time some of my siblings have come home,” she said.

Another daughter Vivian, who spoke on behalf of the family, said: “My father was full of love. He never embarrassed us. I trust he’ll rest in peace.”

Legendary maskandi singer Ihashi Elimhlophe said: “I worked with Soul Brothers for a long time. If Soul Brothers hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be here.” – DailySun.
