Drink of the week…Red Riding Hood

Drink of the week with Peter Matika

The year ends today and what better way to celebrate it than sipping on a zesty, flavourful cocktail.

So this week . . . for the first time I had a cocktail prepared by the fairer sex. I am sure we all have heard of the saying women are good at brewing alcohol, but never had I come across a female mixologist.

Drink Of The Week

The sun was bustling, the air was

hard to take, so I decided, “Heck, let me get myself out of the den and get some fresh air.” So I went to the Mitre Bar, seeking a cool shade, vibe and of course a cold beverage. I decided to order something extraordinaire . . . well not so much so, I mean cocktails aren’t that much of an amazing drink.

Anyway once there, the waitress then told me about their signature cocktails, which I was delighted to indulge. She “prescribed” the Red Riding Hood, a Christmassy drink if I may say. While seated at the counter I hoped to see one of the barmen do the mixing but alas . . . the waitress did the mixing. The recipe goes like so: 1-and -a-half thimbleful of strawberry liqueur, 2 servings of ice, a quarter glass of sprite or lemonade, one thimbleful of Tripple Sec liqueur, a double shot of pink gin, another dazz of sprite or lemonade and to add flavour and a wonderful scent the cocktail is garnished with blackberries. What makes the cocktail even interesting is the container it’s served in.

You get to have your name written on the mug! We are all used to having them served in glasses but for this bar they are served in plastic mugs. Which of course they say is their signature. The woman behind the cocktail Amanda Mathe, who prefers to go by Mandy B said she enjoyed experimenting on drinks and this was just one of her favourites, which is now but one of the Mitre Bar’s signature cocktails.

“Who says we can’t have female mixologists? I think as ladies we are way much better than men when it comes to mixing, after all we  are good in the kitchen. Who says we can’t do the same behind the bar counter,” says Mandy B.

So after guzzling the beverage, which has a sweet and zesty taste of strawberry and lemon flavour and a sweet scent of berries and roses on the nose. I was offered another cocktail. Who am I to deny a drink? She prepared another of her favourites the *Sippy Sweet. It’s one thimbleful Blue Caracau, a dazz of Passion fruit cordial, a double serving of crushed ice, two thimbleful of vodka, sprite and bitters. Now this drink as its name suggests is sweet and passionate.

It’s blue in colour. Beautiful scent and delivers a slow but good feeling. “You know you can come back anytime but please make an appearance on New Year’s Eve, we have the best fireworks display and we will be serving all of our best cocktails to welcome the New Year. Make a date with us, you definitely will not be disappointed,” said Mandy B, trying to lure me back to the establishment.

So after I had those it was time to bid the establishment a good bye but another offer came . . . a cocktail that knocked my lights out. The Boss cocktail . . . well that’s a story for our new chapter in 2023.
