DRUG STORM: Zimpapers leads Schools’ Anti-Abuse Crusade

IT was all about tough talk and tough love in Bulawayo today as Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited (Zimpapers) hosted a powerful Anti-Drug and Substance Abuse Indaba for schools at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre, Hall 3.

The awareness drive brought together pupils from 31 secondary schools to confront the growing scourge of drug and substance abuse that is tearing through communities and classrooms alike.

Ingutsheni Central Hospital Clinical Director, Dr Wellington Ranga, said while many young people turn to drugs as an escape, quitting is far from easy once the habit starts.

“People should not think that those who use drugs are weak,” he said. “Even those without problems can fall into the trap. As a society, we must stop glorifying drug use and start taking responsibility.”

Dr Ranga shot down the notion that family problems justify drug use, saying everyone faces difficulties but must make better life choices.

“We cannot use our family issues as an excuse,” he warned. “No family is perfect — but drugs are never the answer.”

The event highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse, which includes addiction, poor health, broken relationships, mental illness and even death.

Dr Ranga called on schools, parents, and community leaders to unite in tackling the crisis head-on, describing the fight against drug abuse as a collective responsibility.

Keynote speakers included psychologists, therapists and Bulawayo Provincial Education Director Dr Bernard Mazambani, represented by Mrs Memory Phiri, a Schools Inspector and Guidance and Counselling officer.

The Indaba is part of Zimpapers’ ongoing drive to promote positive lifestyles among the youth and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
