A DRUG-PUSHING grandmother has been spared a prison sentence after admitting possession of 70 grammes of mbanje. Beartha Mpofu, 59, of Nkulumane, told a Bulawayo magistrate she sold drugs to pay her sick husband’s medical bills. “I sold mbanje to take care of my family. My husband is not employed and he’s sick too. I didn’t have money to take him to hospital, so I had to sell dagga,” she told magistrate Maphios Moyo at the Western Commonage Magistrates’ Court.
“All my children have passed away, so I have no-one to take care of me. I also take care of my grandchildren, and selling mbanje was the only option.”
Mpofu was sentenced to two months in prison which were conditionally suspended.
Police officers from Tshabalala, acting on a tip-off, raided Mpofu’s home at midnight on June 25 and conducted a search.
The investigators recovered 69 “twists” of mbanje with a street value of $70.
