An unidentified drunk man who was found lying in a sanitary lane died in police holding cells.

A police source said a man notified detectives that while he was urinating in a sanitary lane along Sixth Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way he stumbled upon a man who was heavily drunk lying haplessly on the ground last Friday.

The source said: “Detectives rushed to the scene and found the unidentified man lying on the ground facing downwards and had no identity particulars on him.”

He said police details feared for his life leading them to take him to a police station.

“They feared that he might be harmed in the sanitary lane as a result the heavily intoxicated man who hardly uttered a clear sentence staggered to the police station with them. Upon arrival they put him in a cell so that he could sober up. He spent the night in the cell,”he said.

The source added: “A police officer manning the cells checked on him during the night and he was alive but when another police officer checked  at around 9am the following  day he was unconscious and he then informed his superior who  swiftly called an ambulance  which rushed him to a hospital  where he was pronounced dead upon admission.”

Efforts to get a comment from Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube were fruitless as his mobile number was not reachable.
