A BULAWAYO man offered $25 for the upkeep of his four minor children arguing that he could not give his wife money as she is a drunkard who squanders it all on beer.

Zwelumusa Moyo said he could only pay $25 for the four children aged between two and five years and was willing to take care of the rest of the expenses.

He said his wife Thembelani Mathonsi, who had dragged him to court and was demanding $120 for the upkeep of their children, was an irresponsible drunkard.

“Your Worship, my wife is a heavy drinker. I cannot give her the $120 she wants because I know she will spend it all on beer and my children will suffer. I am offering $25 and I will take care of the other expenses in the house including paying school fees and buying food,” Moyo said.

He said he earns $200 from his job as a mechanic and gives Mathonsi $50 every month. However, Moyo said, he is the one who ends up buying the groceries.

Mathonsi denied being a heavy drinker and said Moyo was also lying that he gives her $50 every month.

“Yes, I drink beer but I would never enjoy it at the expense of my children. He is lying, he never brings any money home,” she said.

Bulawayo magistrate, Mr Franklin Mkhwananzi, ordered Moyo to pay $80 a month for the upkeep of the four minor children. — @YUshamba
