A DRUNKEN teenager ran amok in a nightclub in Gweru assaulting patrons and destroying property.
Sikhuta Gumbo, 18, assaulted revellers at Riverdale bar and destroyed the roof of a nearby thatched tuck shop in the farming area of Matobo road Riverdale, Gweru.
Gweru magistrate, Rutendo Muchena, sentenced Gumbo to five months in prison which was wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.

He was also ordered to pay $70 as compensation for the damaged roof by Thursday next week.
Prosecutor Helen Khosa told the court:

“On 2 February this year at around 9pm, Gumbo who resides at Plot number 133 Riverdale, Matobo Road, Gweru, maliciously damaged a tuck shop shed situated at Plot  number 115 Riverdale, Matobo Road, Gweru, after having too much to drink on that particular                  evening.

Gumbo was one of the patrons who were drinking beer at the bar and he consumed more than he could take. He became violent to the extent of assaulting everyone who was at the bar”.

Khosa said the complainant, Elias Mavindidze, 24, who is the owner of the tuck shop and resides at House number 5524 Mutapa, Gweru, tried to restrain Gumbo but to no avail.

The court heard that Gumbo was incensed and started throwing stools in the air which led to the destruction of the thatched roof of the tuck-shop.

With the help of other patrons, the complainant effected a citizen’s arrest on Gumbo and handed him over to the police.
