SUNGURA musicians are known for taking their time before releasing songs and this has been the case with Binga-born, DT BiO Mudimba (real name Day Tawanda Ncube).
Having released Amana Mazuba a year ago, DT BiO Mudimba is set to release not just another sungura tune, Twabeyi shuwa but he is waging war against anti-social issues, cultural and moral decay.
The song is set to be released later this month on National FM and the Kujatajata hitmaker explained the cultural and moral decay he has seen prevalent in the society.
“Twabeyi shuwa is a Tonga phrase which is translated to ‘Tapindwa nei shuwa’ in Shona and ‘Singenwe yini shuwa?’ in IsiNdebele. That’s a question that I asked myself after introspection and after realising that we as Zimbabweans no longer have the hearts filled of sympathy.
“Many now take pleasure in watching people in agony hence opposed to long ago when people would run to give a helping hand to one in need.
“As the song starts, I am asking a relative to say why would you watch and not warn me as I head towards a deadly pitfall?
“As the song unfolds, I lament the loss of our cultural values and point out to say we have lost the essence of seeing the community as family where by in times of trouble we would share problems and help those in need, instead now it has become, ‘each man for himself.’
“I conclude by citing what I think could be the root cause of this disunity, which I suggest jealousy is one of the factors.
“It now takes joy away to know one has succeeded be it in business and has made people even wish for others to die,” he said.
One of the most important facets of culture is unity, love, and communism all of which DT BiO Mudimba seems as slowly but surely going extinct, replaced by jealousy, hate, and division.
On the latest offering, which like Kujatajata was produced at Afro Recordz Studios in Bulawayo, DT Bio Mudimba had the full complement of Kaani Stars, a group which he fronts. — Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
