THE Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters’ Association (ZNSSA) has described Zifa president Cuthbert Dube’s meet-the-affiliates programme as a futile exercise whose outcome would not change the dwindling fortunes of the domestic game.
Zifa last week announced that their embattled leader would embark on a countrywide tour, visiting a number of Zifa affiliates, who include area zones, provinces, regions, Naph, Nash, Premier Soccer League clubs, Futsal and Beach soccer.
“Those visits are an exercise in futility. Dube has already lost his mandate to lead our football because the councillors have already taken a decision to boot him out of office. As supporters, we’re not going to authenticate that tour of shame by demonstrating or trying to block it because councillors have already made their position clear,” said ZNSSA president Eddie Chivero.
He said it was an open secret that Dube was the Zifa outgoing president whose fate would be sealed on October 3 when the Zifa Assembly meets.
Dube has twice survived ouster after the intervention of world football governing body Fifa.
“Those rallies are just irrelevant because the same people that he’ll be meeting have twice passed a vote of no confidence in his leadership and we don’t see that changing. We urge our councillors to remain resolute and not to be swayed by false promises that are likely to come from this man (Dube), whom we believe is just wasting his time by these visits,” said Chivero.
The tour, set to run up to September 23, began in the capital on Saturday with Dube meeting representatives from Harare province.
Dube urged Zifa Harare province to participate in the development of football by implementing the association’s four-year strategic plan with seven key result areas, which include finance, development, administration, competitions, marketing and communication, legal and statutes as well as capacity building since they are key to success in football.
“The strategic plan is your roadmap to greater things, let’s implement it together,” Dube is quoted as saying on Zifa’s official website.
He also took a swipe at perceived enemies of the game without naming them.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Harare province should never allow our detractors to turn back the wheels of progress,” Dube said.
