TWO exciting young Zimbabwean motor racing drivers Zac Dufty and Marc MacDonald will this weekend take part in their first international event of the year when they race in South Africa.
Dufty, who last year represented Zimbabwe at the Rok World Karting Finals in Italy, and MacDonald, who are both members of Harare Karting Club and race in the MiniRok class, will be racing this weekend at the famous Swartkops International Kart Raceway in Pretoria.
It is the first actual meeting for the 2014 South African Northern Regions Kart Club series as the first meeting at the kart track in Vereeniging (south of Johannesburg) in February was cancelled. Both boys have raced this track in 2013 and are back this weekend to remind the South Africans what young Zimbabwean kart drivers are made of!
They both race in the MiniRok class. MacDonald races under the auspices of the RKT karting team and Dufty races independently as Zac Attack Racing. The boys follow in the footsteps of local motorsport hero Axcil Jefferies who also raced at this track earlier in his career.
It will be a tough race for the youngsters as the forecast is for a wet weather race.
In Zimbabwe, as a way of controlling costs, races are not held in the wet as the karts require special “wet weather tyres”, which push the costs too high.
However, both boys have trained in the wet in South Africa, so they have enough experience to at least put in competitive lap times.
Meanwhile, the next local kart meeting will be held on March 16 from 10:30am at Donnybrook Racetrack in Harare. Entry fee for spectators will be US$10 per car.
