understood that part of the money will, among other things, be spent on renovating and upgrading the dressing rooms and the extension of the precast walls. In the 2008 and 2009 seasons, the now defunct Underhill was forced to play their Premiership games at Mucheke while Dulibadzimu was under renovation.
This follows recommendations made by a team from Zifa which visited the border town recently. The team noted that there was an urgent need to upgrade the dressing rooms, cash rooms, the parameter walls and the opening up of more entry points (at most six).
At the moment there are only two entry points to the stadium — one for the VIPs and the other for ordinary supporters.
They also suggested that there should be six flag poles around the stadium. Plans to construct a new state-of-the-art stadium in the border town have been on the pipeline since time immemorial though the unavailability of funds has been the main bottleneck. Beitbridge Town secretary, Sipho Singo, said they were working around the clock to ensure that they complete all the civil works before the Premiership season begins next month.
“We are doing everything necessary in our capacity to make sure that our local representatives in the Premier League play all their home matches in Beitbridge.
“So far we have covered a lot of work on the drainage system at the stadium. Some of the fears that were raised by teams were that there was no security for the players from the dressing rooms, but we have managed to put a fence around the stadium to ensure safety of the players”, he said
There was an outcry from teams such as Hardbody and Monomotapa who played at the same stadium during the Mbada Diamonds Cup match last year. Singo said the largest chunk of the money will be spent on the dressing rooms, precast walls and entry points, adding that they had completed working on the car park space aspect.
He said at the moment they would concentrate on the priority areas though they would work on the issue of terraces later in the year.
Triple B team manager, Owen Murombedzi, said there was no need for their supporters to panic since they were working together with the local authority in rectifying the grey areas which had been spotted by Zifa.
“We are happy with the progress on the ground and we want to assure our supporters that we are determined to play all our home matches in Beitbridge. We are assessing the progress on weekly basis and we are glad that all is in order,” he said. Murombedzi said they would also beef-up their squad in all departments as they gear up for the fight to stay in the top flight league. Will have new players to blend with the current squad so that we do well in the forthcoming PSL season. We have been receiving support from many stakeholders across Beitbridge and we are geared up for a successful season,” said Murombedzi.
