COULD he be the dumbest thief in Mberengwa?
A 36-year-old Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (Zesa) employee who works at Mataga Station is in the running for the dumbest crook award after he broke into a local bar, stole money, cigarettes and drank beer before falling asleep at the scene.
George Chimombe of Stand number 385 Mataga had one too many beers after breaking into a bar to steal.
He was found lying dead drunk on the doorstep with all the stolen goods resulting in his arrest.
Chimombe appeared before Mberengwa magistrate Tavengwa Sangster facing unlawful entry and theft charges.
On 20 February, Rosemary Ndlela (30) of Tapazi Village left her workplace Mataga Night Club locked and proceeded to sleep in one of the rooms at the back of the bar.
At around 2am, Chimombe broke into the bar using an unknown object to open the door.
While inside the bar, Chimombe allegedly stole $108,50 from a metal cash box, various types of beer that included 750ml Viceroy, 200ml Skippers, 200ml Chateau brandy, 200ml Viceroy, 10 Mega can spirits, 12 pints of lagers, six Dragon energy drinks, 5X20 Madison cigarettes, a USB and six snooker tokens.
It is alleged Chimombe had booze at the bar and as a result he got intoxicated and could not find his way home until sunrise.
He was found the following morning lying at the doorstep of the shop with some of the stolen loot beside him and police were called to the scene, resulting in his arrest.
Chimombe pleaded guilty to the charges and was remanded in custody to 13 March for sentencing. . .
