TWO suspects have appeared in court following their arrest for allegedly breaking into a pastor’s residence and stealing US$4 000.
Rodgers Kasiya (32) and Pretty Mataidza (28), both from Old Pumula, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube, facing charges of unlawful entry. They were remanded in custody until September 24.
Prosecutor Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that the offence was committed on September 7.
On that day, at around 4pm, it is alleged the accused persons travelled to the home of Tinashe Machaya in a silver Toyota Vitz, registration number AGX 6903. Machaya (30) is a pastor at Kingdom Empowerment Centre.
The court heard that upon arrival, Mataidza dropped Kasiya at the gate, after which he entered the complainant’s yard.
Kasiya proceeded to the back door, which he forcibly broke open using his back, thereby gaining entry into the house.
Once inside, Kasiya went to the bedroom and took US$4 000. As he was about to leave, a neighbour spotted him and gave chase.
The accused quickly jumped into their getaway vehicle, which was being driven by Mataidza, according to Mr Dzimbanhete.
The neighbour managed to note down the vehicle’s registration number.
Police investigations led to the recovery of the Toyota Vitz used in the commission of the offence. Officers apprehended both accused and recovered a 32-inch LED television, a two-plate stove, and a mobile phone, all of which had been purchased using the stolen money.
The total value stolen was US$4 000, of which US$800 was recovered, said Mr Dzimbanhete.
