Duo crowned Kamandama champs

fourball-better-ball event saw 132 players taking to the field to raise funds to support the families of victims of the mining disaster that took place in 1976.
Another colliery duo of Charlotte Chibaya and Sabastian Nyoni were runners-up.

Jeremiah Chitindo of Colliery and George Phiri of Alexander Forbes were third on 45 points.
Hwange Colliery Company and several other corporates supported the event.
A total of 427 miners died in the disaster and the event is commemorated every year at the mining town.

Burzil Dube the Hwange spokesman said the tournament was a success as they battled to raise US $ 20 000 from this year’s event.
“The game went on well and we look forward to the commemorations of the Kamandama Mine Disaster.
“As per the norm, a minute of silence will be observed at around 10:25 am at the disaster site.

“Hwange Colliery Company management, staff, widows, dependants, the community and various stakeholders pay homage to the 427 miners who in the morning of 6 June 1972 perished in the Kamandama underground shaft.

“The Kamandama Memorial Fundraising Golf Tournament, that is usually held a day before the commemoration, was a great success and we thank all who supported the event.

“All proceeds and donations raised during this event go towards the Kamandama Memorial Trust Fund,” Dube said.
