Two MDC-T members who destroyed nomination papers of former St Mary’s Ward 3 councillor Tendai Saimon two months ago have been fined $150 each.
Alex Mbweyo (29) and Devine Kanyama (31), who were being charged with contravening the Electoral Amendment Act, were fined by Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Blessing Murwisi.
The pair breached the Act by preventing Saimon’s representative from lodging his nomination papers with the constituency elections officer.
The two will spend three months in prison if they fail to pay the fine.
The prosecutor, Mr Norman Koropi proved that on June 14, Saimon, who was an aspiring MDC-Alliance candidate for St Mary’s Ward 3, gave Knowledge Buranda his identity card, set of certified fingerprints and copy of birth certificate for submission at the Nomination Court.
On arrival at the Chitungwiza Municipality head office where the Nomination Court was sitting, Buranda was approached by Mbwenyo and Kanyama and their other accomplices.
They manhandled him and forcibly took away and tore all the nomination documents that he had, resulting in him failing to file Saimon’s nomination papers.
A report was made to the police leading to their arrest.
