Police have warned members of the public against vandalising public utilities and other critical infrastructure.

The warning follows the arrest of Ben Zvinaishe (27) and the conviction of Takudzwa Mukanzo (22) after both men were found cutting copper cables in Southerton and Mt Hampden areas of Harare.

In a statement, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson, said the public should remain vigilant to help safeguard critical national infrastructure.

“Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), confirms the arrest of Ben Zvinaishe (27) and Telmore Broom (24) for contravening Section 60A (3)(b) of the Electricity Act [Chapter 13:19], which relates to cutting, damaging, destroying or interfering with apparatus used for the generation, transmission, distribution or supply of electricity,” said Detective Inspector Muteweri.

She added that on 16 August 2026 at about 3pm, CID detectives from the Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit deployed in the Mt Hampden area received information that some individuals were digging up and cutting copper cables at Stamford Farm. “Detectives swiftly responded to the scene and found the suspects digging up and cutting armoured copper cables.

“The suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended after a chase. The duo has since appeared in court and was remanded in custody pending trial,” Muteweri said.

In a related case, Takudzwa Mukanzo (22) was convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on 14 August 2026 following his arrest on 13 August 2026 after a vigilant member of the public observed him and an accomplice, who remains at large, digging up copper cables in Southerton.

Mukanzo appeared before Magistrate Tawodzera Zishiri at the Mbare Magistrates’ Court, where he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Joyline Jere represented the State.
