A HARARE pair appeared in court over the weekend it allegedly extorted a businessman, claiming to be representing his aggrieved workers.
Cephas Kwiriwiri and Taizivei Maramwidze were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo.
Allegations are that on November 14, the complainant met the two in the Zindoga area of Waterfalls, Harare, and agreed to discuss some issues regarding his workers’ salaries.
The two claimed they were representing the workers and the matter was being handled at the workers’ union.
They allegedly told the complainant that each worker was demanding US$3 000. The complainant refused to pay the amount, then the two coerced the complainant and threatened to take the matter to the National Employment Council, where he would be ordered to pay US$497 497.
On November 11, they communicated with the complainant over WhatsApp and continued coercing him to pay each of them US$1 200.
On November 14, the complainant decided to set a trap and then invited the two while in the company of Sergeant Kaiswa.
They met at Green Fields Complex in Belvedere and when they got into the complainant’s vehicle, they received US$1 500 each and were immediately arrested.
