A DUO from Beitbridge has been slapped with a 12-month jail sentence for illegally possessing a firearm which they used to threaten people.

Nathaniel Maphosa (30) and Anyway Ndou (38) appeared before a Beitbridge magistrate facing a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. They pleaded not guilty but were convicted and sentenced.

The court heard that on 11 May 2024, police officers who were on patrol at Point 40 in Limpopo, Beitbridge heard gunshots and people shouting.

The police teamed up with the soldiers and proceeded to the direction of the uproar. They met people who had already apprehended the culprits and they indicated that the duo was threatening to kill them.

A search was conducted leading to the recovery of a pistol with 13 live rounds of ammunition. The police requested for a permit that allowed the duo to possess a firearm and they failed to produce it leading to their arrest. The firearm was forfeited by the state.
