THE 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season bursts into life on Sunday as traditional giants Dynamos square up to reigning champions Scottland in the Castle Lager Challenge Cup at Rufaro Stadium.

The atmosphere will crackle long before the 2pm CAT kick-off, with the match serving as both the ceremonial opening of the new campaign and the first real chance for either side to make an early statement before the long league marathon settles into rhythm.

For the PSL, the Challenge Cup is more than a curtain-raiser; it is a tone-setter, a chance to show the polish, preparation and professionalism expected throughout the season.

“We are fully prepared for the Castle Lager Challenge Cup. We have held comprehensive planning meetings with all key stakeholders, including security authorities and our broadcast partners, to ensure a smooth, safe and professionally delivered event,” said Bare.

The promise is clear: a seamless matchday experience, crisp live coverage, high-energy entertainment from the Chillspot Family, and above all, a match worthy of opening the country’s flagship football competition.

“Fans can expect efficient matchday operations, quality live coverage, and exciting entertainment from the Chillspot Family and of course a thrilling contest. Both teams have strengthened their squads and had solid pre-season preparations we are ready for an exciting season opener,” said Bare.

This season also marks the dawn of a new strategic cycle within the league, with Sunday’s spectacle expected to mirror the broader realignment taking place behind the scenes.

“Our 2026-2029 Strategic Plan is now in effect and will guide our operations with a strong focus on professionalism, governance and commercial growth,” said Bare.

The league leadership has already sat down with clubs for the pre-season workshop, ensuring everyone is reading from the same script. And as the spotlight falls on Rufaro, the message remains consistent.

“The Castle Lager Challenge Cup sets the tone for the entire season. It is a premium platform to showcase the PSL brand and the quality of local football,” said Bare. “With the excitement surrounding the fixture, we are confident fans will get real value for money as we launch what promises to be an exciting 2026 campaign,” said Bare.

On the pitch, the storylines are just as engrossing. Dynamos arrive buoyed by their Chibuku Super Cup triumph and have carried that confidence through their preparations. Captain Shadreck Nyahwa did not mince his words when speaking to the PSL media team, setting the tone for a team eager to reclaim heavyweight status. Coach Genesis Mangombe, affectionately known as “Kaka”, is hunting his second major trophy at the helm of Dynamos after guiding them to the 2023 Chibuku Super Cup. His résumé also includes leading Triangle United to last year’s Chibuku Super Cup final, and he has spoken with assurance about how his squad is absorbing his philosophy and embracing the burden of the blue-and-white shirt.

Dynamos have been busy in the transfer window. DR Congo defender Isaac Landu brings muscle and authority to the back line, while former Triangle United midfielder Witness Shave injects industry into the engine room. Up front, the arrival of ex-Yadah forward Mandlenkosi Mlilo adds fresh attacking bite. All three featured in the recent 0–1 loss to Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium, a result that offered Mangombe one last look at his combinations and tactical readiness ahead of Sunday. Malawian forward Stanley Billiat made a second-half appearance in that match, while winger Callum English Brown remains tangled in ongoing contract negotiations.

Across the halfway line, Scottland arrive with the swagger of champions eager to prove that last season’s historic league triumph was no one-off. After lifting the trophy under Tonderai Ndiraya, they now march into 2026 guided by the experienced hand of Norman Mapeza. Crucially, Scottland have kept their title-winning core intact. Striker Tymon Machope remains the spearhead of their attack, supported by the creativity of Walter Musona and Terrence Dzvukamanja, with Panashe Mutimbanyoka providing structure and balance in midfield. Veterans Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat also remain part of the squad, adding steel and big-match experience to a team intent on proving their championship credentials once again.

With US$55 000 in prize money at stake — US$35 000 for the winners and US$20 000 for the runners-up — the financial incentive is clear, and so is the significance of victory in this early-season showcase. Fans returning to Rufaro for the ceremonial kick-off will pay US$5 for general admission, US$10 for VIP and US$20 for VVIP, filling a stadium primed for drama, noise, colour and the raw emotion that only football can summon.
