HIGHLANDERS head Kelvin Kaindu has said complacency is bound to prove to be their biggest enemy ahead of their derby match against Bulawayo Chiefs set for Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
Last weekend, Kaindu guided his charges to a hard-fought 2-1 home triumph over their long-time nemesis Dynamos.
“Our preparations are okay. After our last game, we were concerned that a few players picked up knocks but all of them have since returned to the team. They have been training with the team from the first day we started training. The Dynamos game is gone,” said Kaindu.
He added: “Derby matches are difficult. Bulawayo Chiefs are a very dangerous side because they have been watching our matches and the players are familiar with each other. We are happy that we will play the match at Barbourfields Stadium, a ground that we are familiar with. Although we will not enjoy a few privileges because we will be playing home away from home, we know that our fans will come in numbers to support us.”
Bulawayo Chiefs, who are under the guidance of Thulani “Thuts” Sibanda, are smarting from a 2-1 away defeat they suffered at the hands of Green fuel in a week where a total of 18 goals were scored from eight matches that were played across the country. Bosso, Simba Bhora, Hwange, Chicken Inn, FC Platinum, and Green fuel are the six clubs that managed to collect maximum points with two games ending in draws.
Manica Diamonds, Yadah Stars, CAPS United, Chegutu Pirates, Bulawayo Chiefs and Chegutu Pirates all fell by the wayside in a Match Day One fixtures schedule. Simba Bhora, who beat Manica Diamonds, were the biggest scorers as they found the back of the net three times. Five clubs Arenel Movers, Ngezi Platinum Stars, CAPS United and Chegutu Pirates are the only outfits that failed to score.
Meanwhile, Highlanders announced on Thursday that the club’s chief executive officer Ronald Moyo has elected not to renew his contract that is set to run out on March 31.
“The Highlanders Football Club’s executive takes this opportunity to convey to its members, supporters, and all stakeholders that the club’s chief executive officer Ronald Moyo has elected not to renew his contract at its expiration due on March 31, 2024. The club is profusely thankful and grateful for the commitment that Moyo exhibited during his tenure firstly as the media officer and presently in the role of chief executive officer,” said Bosso in a statement.
