ZIMBABWE’S girls top player Nicole Dzenga booked her place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing ITF South/ Central African Junior Circuit Under-18 when she beat Nicole Petchey yesterday in Windhoek, Namibia. The six-day tournament began on Monday and will end on Saturday.
Dzenga is seeded third in this tournament and had a bye on Monday. She dismissed South Africa’s Petchey 6-2, 6-4 to progress to the last eight and she has a date against fifth seed Louise-Mare Botes in the quarter-finals.
It was also a good day for Alwyn Mushonga as he managed to pull through to the third round in the boys section.
Mushonga prevailed over Bill Badi of South Africa 6-4, 6-0 and he takes on third seed Lloyd Harris today.
In the other matches featuring Zimbabwean players Taremeredzwa Mariga lost to top seed Guy Iradukunda of Burundi 2-6, 4-6.
Mariga had beaten Luke Mostert of South Africa 6-0, 6-2 on Monday in his first match.
Tonderai Tapfuma also went down to Rhys Milne 1-6, 0-6.
In the girls section the trio of Rufaro Chirewa, Tanaka Chakanyuka and Keren Muswere were knocked out of the tournament. Chirewa was the first to be eliminated after losing her opening match on Monday to South Africa’s Maxine Bateman 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 while the pair of Chakanyuka and Muswere won their matches to proceed to the second round.
Chakanyuka beat Sylvia Schulz of Namibia in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 while Muswere overpowered Caitlin Herb of South Africa 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
However, the going got tough yesterday with Chakanyuka going down to Lindsay Truscott of South Africa 1-6, 1-6 and Muswere lost 1-6, 1-6 to Sarah Sarjoo of South Africa.
