THE star continues to shine for junior tennis player Nicole Dzenga as she was recently named Africa’s number one player for the 14-and-under circuit by the Confederation of African Tennis.
According to CAT rankings, Dzenga is ranked first with 473.75 points ahead of Elizabeth Kapari from Ghana with 457.5 points.
Nigeria’s Sarah Adegoke is ranked third with 421 points.
The development comes as a morale booster for Dzenga who won the African Junior Championships zonal qualifiers in Harare last month and will be representing the country in the African Junior Championships scheduled for Egypt in April.
The 14-year-old beat South Africa’s Louise Botes 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the finals to clinch the title.
She was the only local player to reach the finals in the African Junior Championships qualifiers.
Speaking from her base in South Africa, Dzenga said it takes commitment to get such an achievement.
“Given that I am not at the ITF centre or home schooled as is the trend these days, it has taken a lot of dedication, hardwork and perseverance to achieve good results while maintaining good grades at school.
“I train three to four hours a day including mornings before I go to school and play matches during weekends so I don’t have as much free time as other girls of my age,” said Dzenga.
Dzenga has participated in several international events with the highest profile tournament she competed in being the Annecy girls 13-and-under tournament held in France in July 2009.
However, she lost in the early rounds of the competition.
