Zimbabwe’s e-commerce sector is experiencing rapid growth, with the market projected to reach approximately US$445 million in 2025, a significant milestone for the country’s digital economy.

This surge is primarily driven by improved internet connectivity and increasing smartphone penetration.

Ms Revesayi Nyahasha, chief executive of EazzyPay, a Zimbabwean fintech company, said the number of active online shoppers in Zimbabwe has surged, with about 3,5 million individuals actively buying and selling online, which represents a 25 percent year-on-year increase.

“Mobile commerce makes up around 60 percent of all transactions, driven by improved internet connectivity and smartphone use.

“Additionally, social media platforms significantly influence online sales, accounting for 45 percent, with Facebook (65 percent), WhatsApp (50 percent), and Instagram (30 percent) being the preferred platforms for shopping and product discovery,” she said at the launch of the company’s innovative digital payment platform.

The rapid growth of Zimbabwe’s e-commerce sector presents clear opportunities for businesses to tap into the digital market and reach a wider customer base.

As the sector continues to evolve, analysts believe it will have a positive impact on the country’s economy, creating new jobs and stimulating economic growth.

Ms Nyahasha said Zimbabwe’s digital payment landscape is characterised by fragmentation, with users navigating multiple platforms, apps, and physical outlets to access essential services such as utility payments, airtime, data bundles, and event tickets.

She added that long queues, limited service hours, manual confirmation processes, and limited transaction transparency further hinder efficient access.

“Despite a 34 percent increase in digital payments totalling US$5,93 billion in 2025, many users still rely heavily on cash, accounting for 70 percent of transactions, and face delays and frustrations from manual and disconnected systems,” she said.

Alex Kuzakwawo, EazzyPay Payments manager, said by providing a comprehensive digital solution, EazzyPay seeks to eliminate the frustrations associated with multiple platforms, long queues, limited access hours, manual processes, and lack of transaction transparency.

“The platform is expected to improve financial accessibility, particularly for those in rural areas and underserved communities, thereby driving financial inclusion and economic participation,” he said.

Mr Kuzakwawo added that EazzyPay also aims to enhance financial inclusion, reduce transactional inefficiencies, and meet the growing demand for seamless digital services across Zimbabwe.
