A GUN-WIELDING man was shot and wounded by police detectives in Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb on Tuesday afternoon following an exchange of fire.
The man, thought to be linked to a robbery at a funeral parlour in the city, was enjoying an afternoon barbecue with friends outside Mnethi Business Centre in Nkulumane when detectives swarmed the place.

Witnesses said the man, who was putting on a coat and a cap, jumped to his feet and fled when he saw the detectives who were supported by a dogs unit.

“The group had arrived at the business centre in a Toyota Quantum and were busy drinking alcohol and braaing,” said a witness.
“When the police arrived, the robber took to his heels and the detectives gave chase. He fired at them but missed until he ran out of ammunition.”

The witness said one of the police sharp shooters shot him on the hand that was wielding the gun, and it dropped to the ground. The man – who has not been named by the police – continued running.

“The detectives eventually shot him on the shoulder and he fell down. Scores of people rushed to the scene and found him bloodied and writhing in agony on the ground,” said the witness.

“He asked for water from the mob, but no-one gave him attention. An ambulance was called and he was rushed to hospital under police guard.”

Locals said the suspected robber had raided a funeral parlour in Kelvin North before he went to Nkulumane.
Bulawayo police last month gave gun-owners a two-week ultimatum to clear them with the police or face arrest.

They also invited residents to report any suspicions about individuals keeping guns illegally.
Last night, Bulawayo police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Stephen Mutamba told Chronicle: “We will account for every gun in this city. If you’re keeping a gun illegally, we will find you.

“Our mandate is to ensure the safety of every resident, and illegal guns are fuelling violent crime. Residents must play their part and help us weed out criminals.”
