Eagles edge Rocks on final day in Logan Cup

Brandon Moyo, Sports Reporter

EAGLES had to dig deep to overcome Southern Rocks by 101 runs in a 2022/23 Logan Cup cricket encounter at Old Hararians in Harare yesterday.

Eagles had set Rocks a target of 450 after declaring their second innings on 99-4, having been bowled out for 517 all in the first innings. Rocks were wiped out for 348 in the second innings after they had scored 167 in their first take to the crease.

The Eagles’ win was largely due to Craig Ervine and Chamunorwa Chibhabha who scored centuries, with scores of 153 and 149 runs respectively in the first innings.

Keith Jaure took three wickets for Rocks while William Mashinge and Priviledge Chesa had two each.
Rocks batters failed to get going in the first innings with their top scorer being Richmond Mutumbami who finished with 35 runs.

Eagles’ bowling was led by Tapiwa Mufudza and Wessly Madhevere who took three wickets each while Bradley Evans and Faraz Akram had two scalps each.

In the second innings, Eagles’ first innings heroes with the bat, Ervine and Chibhabha did not take to the crease.

Putting out a fight in their second innings, Rocks looked set to pull out a shocker in what turned out to be an interesting red ball match.

Four fifties were scored by Rocks in their fighting second innings. The half centuries came from Brian Mudzinganyama, Cephas Zhuawo, Tafadzwa Tsiga and William Mashinge while Ben Curran fell three runs short of his own milestone on 47 runs.

Madhevere was, once again, in the bowling charts for Eagles in the second innings, taking three wickets, the same as Evans. Tapiwa Mufudza and Munashe Chipara took two each to guide their team to a win in their first match of the season.

The next round of fixtures starts on Thursday and will see Rhinos face Eagles while Rocks will go up against Tuskers. – @brandon_malvin
