Eaglesvale Schools management board has invested close to US$500 000 towards refurbishment of premises and purchase of a new bus and computers as the school consolidates its position as one of Zimbabwe’s top private schools, board chairman Reverend Dr Enos Chomutiri has said. He said this at a breakfast meeting with the media last week where he dismissed allegations of misuse of funds levelled against the management board.
The allegations were made by the school’s dissolved management board which has since approached the courts challenging their dismissal.
Although Dr Chomutiri would not go into details of the legal fight since the matter is sub judice, he said his board did not usurp any authority, but was duly appointed by the school’s trustees.
“We were appointed by the super board, which is the Board of the Reformed Church Trustees. The trustees are the Reformed Church. Actually they were handed over the school in 2010 by the Dutch Reformed Church.”
The Dutch Reformed Church decided to hand over the school to their sister church, the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe in 2010.
“It (the hand over) went on well and all the writings were done and we had to move to make it a legal issue,” said Dr Chomutiri.
“It was taken to the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs. That is when the Dutch Central Africa, who are based in Zimbabwe, surrendered the school openly and officially to the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe.
“Other processes in terms of registration were completed later and the Trustees then appointed a board, which comprises parents with children enrolled at the school.”
Dr Chomutiri said the Board of Trustees gave the new management a task that the standards at the school should not deteriorate.
The school has since bought a bus and spent US$100 000 on renovations of three classroom blocks.
