ELDERLY residents of Bulawayo yesterday enjoyed an early taste of Christmas cheer as they were treated to food hampers, entertainment and hearty meals during celebrations organised across the city to honour senior citizens this festive season.

At Bulawayo City Hall, scores of elderly residents from various suburbs — including some of the country’s pioneer freedom fighters — were hosted to a Christmas luncheon and presented with food hampers by the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) and the Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube.

The event was alive with song, laughter and nostalgia as renowned imbube group Amaqaqa took to the stage, drawing ululations, clapping and spontaneous dancing from the elders. Old-time radio classics from their youth further stirred fond memories, transforming the hall into a celebration of life and shared history.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Ncube said the event was organised to recognise and appreciate the elderly, whom she described as pillars of the community.

“Today, we gather not just to celebrate the season, but to honour you, our revered elders, whose lives and labours have built the foundations of our community. Christmas calls us to reflect on love, light and hope, and that light shines brightly in each of you. You are the keepers of our history, the source of invaluable wisdom and the anchors of our society,” she said.

Minister Ncube reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring that senior citizens age with dignity and adequate support.

“Your well-being is not just a duty, but a sacred responsibility and an investment in our collective future,” she said, wishing the elderly good health, peace and joy during the festive season.

Former Bulawayo Town Clerk Mr Moffat Ndlovu said the elderly play a vital role in strengthening the social fabric of society and challenged young people to tap into their wisdom.

He said their contributions foster a strong sense of belonging across generations.

“Their contributions are vital in fostering a strong sense of belonging across generations. The mix of people, experiences and everyday interactions that keep us happy and involved in our communities is essential in every stage,” said Mr Ndlovu.

“As we get older, staying connected remains just as important.”

Meanwhile, in Luveve suburb, hundreds of elderly residents began gathering as early as 8AM at a popular leisure centre owned by Bulawayo businessman Mr Brian Samuriwo, where they received food hampers comprising mealie-meal, cooking oil, sugar, rice, salt, beans and soap.

The annual charity event is hosted by the Brian Samuriwo Foundation, which Mr Samuriwo said was oversubscribed this year.

“We had to make urgent arrangements to bring in more food so that everyone could go home with something.

“As a businessman operating in Luveve, I appreciate the sacrifices our parents and grandparents made to give us dignified upbringings. It is now our turn to take care of them,” he said.

Mr Samuriwo said the growing numbers attending the event over the past three years were a sign that the initiative was making a meaningful impact.

71-year-old Mrs Belinda Mahlangu of Luveve expressed gratitude to the foundation.
“Blessed is the hand that gives. Every year I look forward to coming here to receive my Christmas gift,” she said with a smile.
