ZIMBABWE’s Earth Hour 2020 commemorations were held yesterday in solidarity with those affected by Covid-19.

Earth Hour is one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment. It draws attention to the immediate need for preserving nature and bio-diversity.  A media release published by WWF, an independent conservation organisation which coordinates Earth Hour, states that this year’s commemorations are centred on the coronavirus pandemic.

Part of the release reads: “In the midst of the global Covid-19 health crisis, Earth Hour marks a moment of solidarity for the planet as global communities unite and organise events digitally.”

The WWF has over 30 million followers and a global network active in nearly 100 countries. Dr Enos Shumba, country director of the WWF, said this year’s Earth Hour commemorations were being held under unusual circumstances.

“We are commemorating Earth Hour under difficult circumstances of the Covid-19 outbreak and our thoughts are with those affected by the virus. At this time more than ever, we need to safeguard our planet,” Dr Shumba said.
