Zimbabwean actress and playwright Danai Guriraas critically acclaimed play Eclipsed ended its run on the world famous Broadway stage where it was raking in $300 000 per week on the famed play circuit.
Last week, its final week on Broadway, the play grossed $481,728.
The play, which is about a group of women being held captive in the African nation of Liberia, stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyongao and officially opened on March 6 following previews that began in February 23.
Upon closing, the critically acclaimed drama will have played 14 previews and 121 regular performances.
Powered by the star power of its playwright, Gurira and its lead actress, the Oscar winning Lupita Nyongao, the play has become a rallying point for the strength of women around the world and the all round toxic effects of war and conflict.
Last week the play was in the running for six awards at the prestigious Tony awards including Best Play, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play (Lupita Nyongao), Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play (Pascale Armand and Saycon Sengbloh), Best Costume Design of a Play (Clint Ramos) and Best Direction of a Play (Liesl Tommy).
However, despite the playas successful run, critics have also argued that it could have raked in more bucks on Broadway, if its main star Nyongao had not missed some of her performances.
Nyongao was only contractually obligated to be in seven shows a week, with Wednesdays stipulated as her off days.
After its run in New York, Eclipsed will make its next appearance next year at San Franciscoas Curran Theatre.
