ZIMBABWE’S mobile money giant EcoCash has shaken up the remittance game by launching a new international money transfer service that allows users to send money out of Zimbabwe to other countries, a first of its kind for the fintech heavyweight.
In a statement released on Wednesday, EcoCash announced that customers can now send money to over a dozen countries including South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Ghana, Rwanda, Lesotho, the DRC and even China via Alipay. More destinations are on the way, with Europe and Asia in the pipeline.
“This is a game-changer,” said EcoCash. “Our customers can now send money for school fees, medical bills and business payments. It’s fast, secure and affordable.”
Gone are the days when EcoCash only received remittances. With this bold move, the platform flips the script, enabling Zimbabweans to support family and business abroad with just a few taps on their phones.
Under the new system, an EcoCash user in Zimbabwe can send money directly into someone’s Mpesa mobile wallet in Kenya or into any South African bank account. No need for long queues or agent visits – just seamless, borderless cash flow.
Zimbabwe has one of Africa’s largest diaspora populations, and while money used to flow mainly into the country, there’s now a growing need to send funds out, especially for students, patients and entrepreneurs.
“This service responds to real customer needs,” said the company. “The world is more connected and so are our users.”
EcoCash’s move is expected to rattle traditional money transfer giants that rely on physical agents. By offering a fully digital experience, EcoCash puts the power back in the hands of the people – literally.
Watch this space. Remittances will never be the same.
