Econet introduces new 079 number range as demand for its services grows amid network expansion drive
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has introduced a new mobile number range, 079, increasing its capacity to take on new customers as demand for its products and services grows, amid the company’s network investment and expansion drive.

Econet said new SIM cards with the 079 number range are already available at Econet shops and authorised channel partners around the country, giving new and existing customers the opportunity to enjoy more of the company’s diverse range of mobile, ditigal and finchech products.

“We are growing – and we want our customers to grow with us. The introduction of the new number range reflects that growth as well as our commitment to ensuring that more Zimbabweans from more places around the country can connect, communicate and participate in the digital economy,” Econet said in a statement.
The company has historically operated within the 077 and 078 numbering ranges, which have now been exhausted as it continues to grow.

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz)’s most recent sector performance report (in Quarter 1) put Econet’s active subscriber base at close to 13 million customers – with market estimates putting the number of the company’s connected customer base in the region of 16 million.

The introduction of the 079 range provides the company with additional numbering capacity as more Zimbabweans choose Econet’s wide assortment of products and services which include mobile services, fast-speed data access, digital financial services, business and enterprise solutions, entertainment and many more.

“By making additional numbers available, we are allowing more people to participate in a digitally connected future that leaves no one behind,” said Econet.

The new number range comes as Econet continues to invest in expanding and upgrading its network to keep pace with changing patterns of mobile usage.

The company recently committed to invest more than US$200 million towards strengthening its network infrastructure, including the expansion of its 4G and 5G capacity as data usage continues to rise.
The investment is aimed at improving network capacity and service quality while supporting growing demand for high-speed connectivity across Zimbabwe.

The introduction of the 079 range is therefore part of a broader expansion of Econet’s services and infrastructure as the company works to ensure that its network has sufficient capacity to support Zimbabwe’s increasingly connected population.
Econet said customers can select their own unique numbers from the new 079 range, subject to availability.
