EDGARS Stores Limited has donated sports kits and equipment worth US$2 500 to Nuli Primary School in Beitbridge to promote sporting activities and nurture talent among learners.

The donation was made on Thursday through the retailer’s annual Be A Hero Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign.

The kits and equipment cover soccer, handball and volleyball for both boys and girls, while netball kits were provided for girls.

The handover ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, representatives from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the District Administrator, the local councillor, members of the School Development Committee, teachers and learners.

Speaking at the handover, Jet Stores Managing Director Mr Mbengeni Mabidi said sport was an important part of children’s development beyond the classroom.

“Edgars recognises that education extends beyond the classroom. Participation in sport provides children with valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, discipline, perseverance and respect for others, while identifying and nurturing their individual talents,” he said.

Nuli Primary School head Mr Makasani Ngulube said the initiative was a platform for school children to thrive.

“The initiative also highlights the importance of collaboration between the private sector, educational institutions and local communities in creating opportunities for children to thrive,” said Mr Ngulube.

The Be A Hero campaign is held annually in recognition of Heroes’ Day, with a percentage of sales from selected products channelled towards purchasing sports kits and equipment for primary school learners.

The initiative seeks to encourage participation in sport while helping children develop teamwork, discipline, resilience and leadership skills.

Edgars said the donation also reflected the importance of partnerships between businesses, schools and local communities in creating opportunities for young people.

Through the initiative, the retailer hopes to encourage Nuli Primary School learners to pursue their sporting ambitions and develop their talents.
