EDITORIAL COMMENT : FLUSH OUT ROGUE COPS

CASES of rogue police officers being caught offside continues to soil the image of our professional and dedicated police force.

Over the years, we had known the police to be smart and exemplary.

As custodians of the law, many would put their faith in them when it comes to conflict resolution and the arrest of criminals.

The force was also known for doing their jobs diligently.

Without fear or favour, they would bring anyone to book who was caught on the wrong side of law.

There were no sacred cows when it came to the arrest of wrong doers.

Charisma, etiquette and dedication to duty used to define them.

However, all this is fading by each passing day.

It has become common to read about rogue cops being involved in criminal activities like armed robbery, battery and fraud.

This has left many questioning the credibility of the force, which used to be ranked among the best in Africa.

How these officers have become strangers to professionalism baffles the mind?

It also appears that some of the new breed of cops we have is now a danger to society.

Some of them are now terrorising citizens with their conduct.

In yesterday’s issue, we carried a story of four cops accused of breaking a safe they had recovered and sharing the loot among themselves.

The quartet, attached to CID, allegedly stole a safe containing US$70000 and jewellery worth US$10000.

In another case, the police officers, who allegedly caused the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a commuter omnibus, also appeared in court charged with murder.

It has been established that they manned a roadblock, which was unsanctioned.

The cops were met with mob justice and the effects could be seen as one of them had to be carried into court.

There are also several cases, involving the police, which are sickening despite them being the custodians of law.

What is driving some of our cops to commit crimes is a question for another day.

Of course, some might blame poor remuneration but this should never be a licence for the police to be found on the wrong side of law.

The police chiefs need to be thorough when recruiting officers to serve the nation.

There is also a need for refresher courses among the cops to ensure they maintain standards expected of them.

Besides the refresher courses, joining the force should be a calling.

It comes with responsibility.

Once we have people who are dedicated to duty, cases of cops being found wanting will be eradicated.

There is also need for the cops to learn to live within their means.

The love for material wealth, and easy money, has also driven some to turn themselves into criminals.

Those caught on the wrong side of low should be handed stiffer penalties to ensure a clear message is sent to would-be offenders.
