Editorial Comment: HONESTY SUSTAINS MARRIAGES

DISHONESTY, betrayal and suspicion are a recipe for disaster.

This wicked combination creates a time bomb, especially when lies are added.

This defines the course most love relationships and marriages have taken nowadays.

Whether it’s a new trend, or not, love should not hurt, as is the case with most couples.

Bleeding hearts, and bruised souls, have become a way of life.

The once sacred marriage institution has been desecrated by pretenders and time-wasters. Courtship has been reduced to child’s play.

Couples should understand each other better during courtship, where secrets are shared.

Weaknesses and strengths are also learnt during this period.

However, some partners conceal secrets that will come to haunt them later.

Whether it’s insecurity or simply being evil, which drives couples to lie, skeletons will always come tumbling out of the closet. Yesterday, we carried a shocking love story involving a couple where a married woman concealed a child from a previous marriage.

The husband only discovered the truth after seven years.

The secret came to light at the Harare Civil Court where the woman applied for a protection order against her husband. She had been turned into a punching bag by the infuriated husband, after he discovered the long-kept secret.

It’s unfair to be taken for a ride by a partner you shared deep secrets with.

True love comes with emotions, and attachment, which are meant to be taken to grave.

It’s hard to come to terms with betrayal when you unearth such cases.

These secrets can easily destroy marriages and douse the love flame, which used to exist.

As a remedy, couples need to know each other better before they marry.

There is nothing wrong with couples telling each other about their previous relationships, and marriages, when dating. This can only help strengthen love relationships and marriages.

People have every right to understand their partners’ backgrounds and the previous affairs they had.

This knowledge is important for couples to make life-changing decisions.

In cases where couples need time to make a decision, they should be allowed to do so. Concealing secrets is not only harmful but a recipe for disaster.

There are some secrets you cannot keep for life, especially the existence of children. These kids will always emerge in the future when they need their parents.

It should come as a lesson to couples that nothing under the sun will be concealed forever.

As the elders say, lies will always come to haunt you.

Honesty and integrity are required to shape marriages.

Healthy communication and trust will always remain key in sustaining marriages. Failure to adhere to these basics has seen most relationships becoming toxic.

It has also fuelled gender-based violence in homes. In a nutshell, lies and betrayal have no place in true love.
