THE sad loss of a reveller after being attacked near Belgravia Shopping Centre makes sad reading.
It shows that there are some revellers who come to pubs with hidden agendas other than having fun.
Pubs are meant to be sanctuaries for joy and entertainment to imbibers after a long day of hustling.
The Belgravia tragedy comes at a time when most pub owners have been denouncing violence.
In recent months, two bouncers – Gideon Sanyangore and Blessing Kumunda – were blamed for causing commotion in most pubs.
The pair would attack revellers unprovoked, which led to their arrest.
Following their arrest, it was our hope that fellow revellers, and other bullies, would learn one or two things.
It’s, however, sad when revellers fail to find each other after a misunderstanding.
Resorting to violence, after arguments, is totally unacceptable.
When people are drunk, their reasoning power is diminished and bar brawls have been known to end in tragedy.
That was the case at KwaBelinda, the bar at 161 Sam Nujoma Avenue, in Harare, on Sunday morning.
The watering hole has been tainted following the death of a reveller known as David Matambo.
The death could have been avoided had the two parties resorted to dialogue.
Whatever led to the attack on the other could have been avoided had a way been found to avoid the violence which cost a life.
The man who died was a breadwinner, a father, a brother, a son and his family is now deep in mourning.
Fellow revellers, who witnessed the fight, will take ages to heal because of the scars inflicted by this ordeal.
The same applies to some bartenders, who watched the man being pummelled, leading to his death.
Pubs are meant to provide a place for fun and are not battlefields for fights.
In most cases, some of these boozy-fuelled attacks emanate from petty issues, which can be easily addressed, through dialogue.
A simple “sorry” could have worked in this case.
Losing a life in a bar brawl is not only sad but totally unacceptable.
Violent people should be ejected from pubs as they cause commotion and unnecessary fights.
Thugs should also be ejected from pubs for the maintenance of peace and order.
Harassment of patrons should never be allowed to happen.
A number of people come to pubs to ease their sorrows and stress.
It’s a known fact that most people are going through a lot but those emotions should not be resolved through fights.
People should learn to walk away when confronted by violent people.
An apology is enough to avoid unnecessary fights.
Most of these fights are as a result of arrogance and failure to control emotions.
In most cases, bar brawls are caused by silly issues.
Bullying each other should not be an option.
Bullies should never be allowed in pubs as was the case at KwaBelinda.
